090-grow ideas

you have to grow ideas.

you have to grow the performance of those ideas.  both in terms of connectivity / appellation and in terms off speed.

you have to trim old ideas that hinder performance
sometimes trim old ideas that hinder access to new ideas and regions

you have to dream in the new idea modes.  this is key.  without being able to dream in new idea modes, you can't optimize and grow the new idea networks.   what does that mean, dream in the new modes?   dreams are the signaling and formation of connections between networks with little or no interference between the "outside" activity and outside inputs.  The dream world is explicitly not the physical world.  The dream world is no less real.  the problem for dreaming is that you must dream in the new ways to think, the new ways to see, the new ways to feel.

the dreaming world itself must change.  how does the dreaming world itself change without actually changing the structures, the neurological structures that give rise to ideas and experiences?  the brain must change for the dreams to change, the dreams must change for the brain to change.  it's a bootstrap process.

the subjects of hypnagogic thought must change.  the focus of attention is the focus of hypnagogic attention  eg. I played too much GTA lately, struggling to do a run around Los Santos chased by the cops when I should be working on writing up rep theory and on making an actual AI.  what my hypnagogic periods are about are my concerns.  people i'm thinking about, the game, stuff like that.

shift that thinking, shift all the thinking to the new problems, to the new struggles to develop, to grow the idea.  the unregulated world of dreams is not undirected world.  but to direct dream action requires attention on the contents of dreams.  the contents of dreams come from our experience, from our daily life.  the hypnogogic experience is powerfully unregulated, akin to a dream.  for thoughts to flow into new perspectives, new viewpoints requires the thoughts to already be flowing in those directions.  as network connections are altered through cellular activity, new ideas can form and can be recognized.

it's not merely that we must have new ideas, we must recognize the new idea.  this is a perspective shift.

it isn't just growing pattern detectors though.  it's all growing sharing between detector and initiator sites.  it's the whole web, the web neural connections, and idea connections itself must optimize for new patterns.  but dreaming is the key feature when dropped connections can be tested, because they just got dropped.  maximize the dreaming experience on a subject and you maximize the learning rate of new/grown ideas.  you optimize the networks through repetitive action.  and hypnagogic periods may correspond to a period that primes for the removal of those network connections that slow the optimization and development.  because the hypnagogic dreams are all about the problem the repetition, the conflict space.

this is also why repeatedly encountering a problem (me not being able to get past the cops to far) produces hypnagogic activity.  because we must grow and drop connections to develop new solutions.    it is problem repetition that is important.  problem repetition leads to conceptual perception. memorization is just the most obvious example of this.  but recognizing animals, sounds, words, movements, etc are all examples of encountering problems.  the development of networks where these are not problems.  and at the network level it is a negative signal (failure of some kind), or no-signal.  a positive signal is one the correlates to the diminishment of difficulty. the negative signal dies down or the no-signal outcome goes away itself.

certain motivation/initiative driving experiences produce synaptic growth.  that certain neurons induce synaptic growth by stigmatically exciting neuron growth in other neurons.   the neural correlate is the motivation/initiative impetus to some neural driven correlate to develop new synapses, grow axons etc.  ie. we want to learn

because synaptic growth is all chemically driven.

-note to tracy golden:

something I left unwritten above is that often a pattern is seen in a dream because we drop certain things, because we undo certain connections and thus see in a new way.   it is when we sleep that we lose connections (it's safer to do than when we are awake), and thus in dreams we get some kind of cognitive access to these new networks and because connections are lost, new patterns emerge.

Note to:

Tracy,

okay, now this intrigues me, because I generally assume people move through the world in the same way, but I am only coming to appreciate how large the perceptual differences people may be.

I just woke up from a nap where I can tell my brain has been working on a problem, because it wants to me to nap hard core. the dreams were interesting and amazing. there was a love story, followed by a kind of faerie amusement park attraction that had actual real faeries in it (sort of like "night at the museum" style). then more weirdness, about connections between things, how the faeries grew and what it meant that they could be grown. it was sort of like a dream about dreaming as a cognitive exercise. And that, I think is the deeper point my brain was trying to develop and connect. To understand new ideas, new ways to see and act in the world we must develop dreams about the new ideas and the new actions. the dreaming world itself must change.

the notion that came to me is that new ideas have to be grown. grown with the connections between neurons. growing new synaptic connections, and then as importantly dropping existing connection pathways to optimize these new pathways, that is learning, but it is also new ideas, and it is the only way to change perspective so that dreams themselves change.

of course, this is all about pattern detection. synaptic development is all about capturing patterns. without neurological structures, patterns cannot be perceived at all. And how are novel patterns perceived, new brain structures.

anyway, I'm rambling because I'm so excited. I didn't know I had another good idea in me that needed to come out.
